The UK is such a fantastic place to travel around, from stunning countryside and coastline to gorgeous historical cities and incredible nightlife.
With so much choice, just picking the right place to go for a city break can feel like a bit of a headache, thankfully we’ve pulled together some quick ideas for things to do in some of the UK’s most popular city destinations.
London
You aren’t going to find many more locations with as many things to do as the nation’s capital. From famous landmarks, galleries, and museums to the West End and an incredible amount of gigs and shows. There’s always something to do and always something new to see.
This makes London a fantastic place to go for a few days and let you tailor each day to the interests of different people you’re travelling with. Someone wants to shop? No problem. The resident foodie looking to eat their way around pop-up stalls and hidden gem restaurants? You can do that to. It’s a city that accommodates pretty much everyone, from the history buff to the culture vulture.
Edinburgh
Much like London, Edinburgh is a city with loads to see and do, making it perfect for tourists. Throughout Summer the city hosts the Fringe Festival, one of the worlds largest creative and performing arts festivals.
Running throughout August, this year’s event currently has 3117 different events announced, so you’ll be hard pressed not to find something that gets your attention.
The Fringe is a massive summer attraction, but it isn’t the only reason to head to Edinburgh. The castle, zoo and galleries are all great activities for family days out. Edinburgh also makes a fantastic base to explore more of Scotland from.
York
From York Races to delving into Viking history at Jorvik or wandering through the weird and wonderful shops in the Shambles, York is another city with a range of activities to think about getting involved in.
York is one of those places that really lets you dictate the pace of your visit. Whether you’re sightseeing, or content to spend a day sat by the river. You can enjoy a really sedate stay or enjoy shopping, or trips to destinations like the National Railway Museum.
There’s lots of quirky places to visit too. Like if you’re into the supernatural York allegedly has some of the UKs most haunted pubs, a perfect destination for anyone that’s a fan of spirits.
Brighton
Let’s face it, in Summer people are always going to be drawn to the coast. Fish & Chips, ice cream and sprawling on a beach are all key components of making the most of the sunshine.
Brighton is a perfect destination for anyone chasing the sun and wanting to hit the beach. But it has much more to offer with an eclectic nightlife and arts scene. Much like London there’s always something going on or a show to go see, so if you’re feeling spontaneous when you visit there’s a chance to do something out of the ordinary.
Brighton is also the venue for one of the UK’s biggest Pride celebrations in early August. A fantastic celebration of the LGBTQ+ community that draws in people from across the UK and creates an incredible party atmosphere that’s definitely worth being part of.
Bath
Some city breaks make a great launching pad for exploring other areas. Bath sits as a gateway to the Southeast, a fantastic city with incredible architecture, places to eat, shopping and places to explore.
Bath is home to an incredibly well-preserved Roman bathhouse. It’s a fascinating place to walk around, but seeing where people would’ve relaxed while you can’t get in to have a soak can be annoying. Thankfully Bath is home to multiple spas making it a perfect place to visit to get pampered and unwind.
Bath also makes a fantastic place to use as a base for visiting other places, so if you stay for a few days and want to get out of the city and explore the Cotswolds you can reach picturesque villages really easily.
