What is Destination Charging?

Getting an electric car can be an exciting and transformative experience, as it changes the way we typically get around. It feels like stepping into the future, especially when you no longer have to rely on petrol stations for refuelling. With EV charging, you can simply park, plug in your car, and go do something else while it charges.

However, until there are enough charging stations across the country, finding a place to charge may still be a concern. That’s where destination charging comes in.

Define destination charging?

Destination charging refers to the practice of charging your car at a specific, pre-planned location. This could be at the end of your trip or a midpoint or break during your journey. The idea is to charge your car somewhere you want to spend some time so you can get a longer charge before continuing your trip.

How does destination charging help with travel?

Planning a road trip with an electric car can be a bit challenging, especially when you have limited time and plenty of options for places to stay and things to do along your route. Destination charging helps narrow down your options by focusing on places that offer the EV charging you need to complete your trip.

To make the most of destination charging, it’s helpful to find a place where you can spend some time while your car charges. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a service station. It’s an opportunity to explore a new area, visit a museum, go shopping, or engage in other activities that take a few hours.

Finding the perfect charging destination

When looking for the ideal place to park and charge your car, there are a few things to consider in a friendly and relaxed manner:

EV Chargers: Look for places that have charging stations, that’s the whole reason you needed to stop after all. Keep an eye out for fast or rapid chargers, they could potentially give you more of a boost to your battery in a shorter time frame, letting you get back on the road a bit quicker if needs be.

Somewhere to eat: Find a place where you can relax, enjoy a meal, and pass the time while your car charges. Just be mindful of choosing foods that won’t make you too sleepy, especially if you still have a long way to go.

An activity that takes a few hours: Use this charging opportunity to engage in an activity that you enjoy and that will help pass the time. It could be shopping, visiting a museum, going for a hike, or trying something adventurous like bungee jumping.

Not a major detour from your route: Choose a charging destination that is not too far off your planned route. This way, when you leave the parking area, you’ll be close to getting back on track, maximising the range of your fully charged car, there’s no point making a massive detour to recharge only to use all that energy getting back to your route.

By planning your charging destinations, you can make your trip more organized and enjoyable, ensuring a stress-free experience while adjusting to the exciting world of electric vehicles.
