School the School Run

Getting out of the house in the morning can be…chaotic. Getting ready for work while getting ready for school, handling the commute and the school run, it can be a lot to deal with.

We’ve got some handy tips that should help.

Prep the night before

Think about the big rushes in the morning, making lunch, prepping breakfast, and packing school bags. These are all things that you can do the night before and save yourself time in the morning.

Laying out clothes for the next day, packing PE kits and getting bags ready are jobs for the kids to do before bed. Breakfasts could be things like overnight oats, quick to put together, then ready to go in the morning.

The idea should be to make as many of the hurdles in getting out the door in the morning into something you can treat more as a grab-and-go.

It’s less to worry about before bed, and less stress in the morning.

Set a routine

One of the easiest ways to get out of the house in the morning is repetition. A routine that you follow as closely as possible, from setting an alarm, having a time you aim to be out of the house at, and your route to your destination.

A routine gets quicker over time, and eventually you’ll be flying out the door.

Wiggle room

As kids get older and jobs change, the routine might not always be the same. Even temporary things, like roadworks, traffic jams, inset days and illness can be a new obstacle to deal with.

Building some wiggle room into your routine is important. That little bit of flexibility to check traffic, phone school, or adjust your route in the morning can do wonders for how stressful your commute and school run are.

This could be something as easy as setting the alarm for 15 minutes earlier than you need to.

Stave off post-half-term chaos

Half-term, school holidays, or time off work are all a chance to relax and unwind. But getting back into the swing of things can make the school run difficult for a few days while everyone readjusts.

Whether it’s everyone sleeping in or having breakfast later, it’s worth gradually easing back into that routine earlier.

That might mean getting up at the usual time, starting to prep breakfast the night before and just generally trying to get back to normal. This makes a huge difference when it’s time to go back to school; the shift back to reality isn’t as jarring and should keep you moving.

Breakfast Club?

It might sound mad, but what about removing the kids from the equation?

Schools and nurseries often do Breakfast Clubs and early drop-offs. You could use these to your advantage, get the kids to school and then give yourself more time to get ready in peace.

Granted, this all depends on your commute and where you live in relation to school, but if the option is there, it could help make your morning routine much easier.

Taking the stress out of travel is something you can do before you even step out of the front door. That could be simple tips to make your mornings easier, knowing how to have a more relaxed trip, or it could be planning ahead when it comes to your parking.
