The Hidden Costs of Bad Parking (And How to Avoid Them)

When you’re driving somewhere and trying to find parking, how much impact do the decisions you make have on the rest of your trip?

You might be surprised, but poor choices when you park can change your next trip out or just your commute in ways you didn’t expect.

We’re taking a look at some of the mistakes people make, the problems they cause and how you can avoid them.

Crammed car parks and wrong locations

Trying to find parking, or a space you’re happy to leave a car in, can be stressful. Right by a wall, in a cramped area, or a space you just know is going to be a pain to get out of later.

Those are the sort of background worries that you just don’t need during a day.

The same goes for if you just try to find somewhere to park and don’t necessarily think about where you’re parking in relation to where you’re supposed to be going.

A trek through a city you don’t know or struggling to find your destination can make getting to meetings or appointments more painful than they need to be and put you in the wrong frame of mind.

Pre-booking solves these problems by letting you plan ahead. You can find parking in the right area, for the right price and give yourself enough time to find the perfect place to park.

Not understanding the rules

Car parks almost always have rules in place on them. That could be a maximum stay, needing to pay and display or even rules over which spaces you are allowed to park in, depending on whether you are a visitor or staff.

Just parking and cracking on with your day can sometimes leave you at risk of not following the rules and getting hit with a parking ticket.

Just like parking without checking the costs, this leaves you at risk of a nasty surprise.

You can check the signs in a car park when you arrive to see what the costs will be like or what rules are in place. You can also usually find out information online – a quick Google before you set off could save you time and money down the line.

Running late

Setting off later than normal, or just running late in general, can create an escalating set of issues that it’s hard to recover from.

First, you’re stressed and rushing from setting off late, then you hit extra traffic you’d otherwise have missed. That stress builds, only for you to arrive at your usual car park and find it more full than normal, so it takes longer to find a space and pay for your parking. Now you’re running late, have to skip picking up a coffee, then you still have to get to your destination later than you planned, but without coffee and much more flustered.

It might sound dramatic, but that’s the sort of thing that, first thing in the morning, can and will ruin your day.

Nightmare commutes like this are few and far between (thankfully), but you can make life easier and save time. This is where pre-booking comes to the rescue again.

Pre-booking before you set off can claw back some valuable time because your parking is arranged, paid for and ready to go. All you need to do is park up and get on with the rest of your trip.

This can take some of the anxiety out of running late because your booking covers your back and paying in advance means one less job to deal with when you arrive.
